Isola di Vir, Zadar Riviera

The island of Vir is located near the major tourist city of Zadar and is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Vast sandy beaches, an indented coastline and shallow waters attract tourists from all over the world. In the immediate vicinity of the bridge is the uninhabited island of Školjić. The island is covered with dense pine forest and features a long sandy beach. The beautiful beaches of Vir are lined one after the other along the island’s entire coast, while welcoming hosts offer comfortable accommodation in apartments and holiday homes by the sea. The parish Church of St. George on the island of Vir was built in 1845 on the foundations of the 13th century church of the same name. Kaštelina, a historic Venetian fortress built in the early 16th century, is a particular interesting landmark of the island. It once served to defend the population of Vir and Nin against Ottoman attacks. The highest peak of the island called Bandiri reveals the remains of the foundations of the Church of St. George from the period between the 12th and 15th centuries. Numerous bars and restaurants in Vir offer refreshments and traditional Dalmatian dishes. Guests staying on this island can visit cultural and historical sights in nearby Zadar and the royal town of Nin, but also explore the natural beauties of the surrounding national parks: Krka, Plitvice, Kornati, Paklenica and Northern Velebit.
