Matulji, Opatija Riviera

The municipality of Matulji is, because of its location in the hinterland of Opatija, also known as the "Gate of Kvarner". The locals are particularly proud of their traditions and customs, such as the carnival celebration and the bell-ringing tradition that have been preserved to this day. The bellmen or Zvončari were added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity due to their uniqueness. Namely, during the carnival, the men tie heavy bells around their waists and disguise themselves with frightening masks before they take off to tour the surrounding settlements. Matulji is also well-known for is its gastronomic tradition, so do not miss to visit the local taverns and restaurants called "oštarije". Try and enjoy local dishes, accompanied by a glass of the delicious wine Jarbol from Matulji, which is made from an indigenous grape variety. A wide scope of accommodation is offered in many apartments and holiday homes. Fans of active holidays can enjoy cycling and hiking along the trails on the slopes of mountain Učka, whereas sunbathers and swimmers might decide to spend a lazy day at one of the many beautiful beaches of the Opatija Riviera.
