Nationalpark Risnjak

Risnjak National park is located right on the edge of the mountain with one part turned towards the sea zone. This forested mountain range, not far from the town of Rijeka, got its name from the lynx („ris“), which is its most popular resident. If you love mountaineering make the journey to Risnjak because this park will reward you with magnificient sights. As it finds itself on the crossroads between the Alps and the Dinarides, between the Mediterranean and Central Europe, in this small region are gathered almost all the types of woods and in this region lives a large number of varied plant and animal life. Here are present a large number of karst phenomena, and the graceful landscape which surrounds the source of the river Kupa will leave you speechless.

The park extends to a total area of around 6400 hectares of which 4600 hectares are a completely protected area, in which no kinds of human interventions are allowed – The only thing that is allowed are natural processes. If you take a walk in Risnjak you won't be alone. From the heights you will be keenly observed by the eye of some eagle, while on your journey you might encounter a wild cat, lynx or wild goat, and maybe you will be watched stealthily by a brown bear. However, there is a much bigger chance that some deer will run by in the distance.
