Lumbarda, Insel Korčula

Lumbarda, the picturesque settlement located at the southeastern end of the island of Korčula, has been writing its history for centuries. It was founded in the 3rd century by ancient Greeks from the island of Vis, i.e. the Greek colony Issa, as evidenced by the famous Lumbarda Psephisma, a stone inscription that set the conditions for the founding of the colony. Over the course of time, Lumbarda was under the control of the Romans and later the Venetian Republic, all leaving their marks in its history. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Lumbarda became a summer destination of Korčula’s nobility, as evidenced by the Baroque manors of Korčula’s patrician families. Grk, the famous dessert wine, is produced near Lumbarda and unique as it grows only here in its sandy soils. Lumbarda’s friendly hosts offer accommodation in villas, holiday homes and apartments. Beautiful beaches, such as Bilin žal and Pržina, are very popular during the summer. Amidst the scents of pine and medicinal herbs, lovers of active holidays can explore the area on well-maintained bike and hiking trails that lead to hidden beauties around Lumbarda.
