The town of Drniš, Šibenik hinterland

The town of Drniš is located in the hinterland of Šibenik between three mountains: Promina, Moseć and Svilaja. It is a town with a turbulent history as it was conquered by the Ottomans, Venetians and Austrians. Numerous cultural and historical sights testify to the rich history of Drniš. Particularly interesting is the system of medieval fortifications like Ključica, Kamičak, Bogočin, Nečven and Trošenj, which represent one of the most important historical defense structures in Croatia. The Gradina fortress above the town of Drniš is another attraction of the town and open to visitors. Drniš has several beautiful churches, of which the Church of St. Anthony of Padua is worth mentioning as it was built as a mosque in the 16th century during the Ottoman rule. It was not until the 17th century that it became a Christian church. The specific feature of this church is the fact that the building’s original form has been preserved, as have been the original ornaments from the Ottoman period that were made in the Moorish style on the inner surface of the dome.

The Drniš region is known for its exceptional natural beauties, so do not miss to walk along the magical canyon of the Čikola River, visit the nearby Krka National Park and the small island of Visovac on the Krka River and its secluded monastery. The locals especially cherish their gastronomic tradition and will proudly offer their guests the famous Drniš prosciutto, bread baked under the lid “peka”, grilled lamb, arambašići (small cabbage rolls stuffed with meat), all accompanied by a good drop of local wines from indigenous grape varieties. Cheese lovers are recommended to taste the famous Drniš sheep cheese, a tastefully delicacy that owes its unique taste to the fermentation process in a bag made of specially processed sheep skin. The large tourist centers on the Adriatic coast such as Split, Trogir, Šibenik and Zadar are within easy reach from Drniš.
