The town of Knin, Šibenik hinterland

The royal town of Knin lies in a fairytale karst landscape between the great mountains of Dinara and Velebit and was the capital of Croatian kings throughout the Middle Ages. The famous and well-preserved fortress of Knin is the largest fortification monument in Croatia, whose construction began in the 9th century. The fortress comes to life every year in June, when the traditional event “Days of Zvonimir” takes place and visitors and locals have the opportunity to see the way of life in the Middle Ages and to learn about the rich history and tradition of Croatia’s royal town. The event features various activities, such as exhibitions and workshops, as well as presentations of local and regional handicrafts and crafts. The turbulent history of Knin and its surroundings is testified by the remains of the Roman camp Burnum and by the archeological park Biskupija that is the largest medieval archeological site in Croatia.

There are also numerous sacral monuments worth a visit, particularly the Krka Monastery, which is the spiritual center of the Orthodox faith in the region, and the Church of the Holy Salvation, which is the oldest early Croatian church from 9th century that is located at the source of the river Cetina. As many as 7 rivers, the largest of which are the rivers Krka and Zrmanja, flow through this area, thereby creating magical waterfalls, rapids and lakes. One of the largest Dalmatian rivers is Cetina that originates in the area near Knin and continues its way to Omiš where it flows into the sea.

The most interesting natural attractions of this area are Vrela Cetine located at the foot of the Dinara mountain, Topoljski buk on the river Krčić under which the river Krka emerges, the river Kosovčica along which the beautiful Burumska and Šarena lakes were created. Also fascinating are the mystical caves Gospodska near the hamlet Milaši and the large Ćulum cave near Kijevo. Fans of active holidays can enjoy numerous well-maintained cycling, hiking, mountaineering and riding trails on the magnificent Dinara mountain. Those with a more relaxed and calmer spirit can enjoy fishing on the quiet lakes Burumska and Šarena or try canoeing through the fascinating Krka river canyon. The tourist centers Split, Trogir, Šibenik and Zadar on the Adriatic coast can be easily reached from Knin. The fairytale landscapes of royal Knin are waiting for you.
