Metković, The valley of Neretva

Although in close proximity to the Adriatic Sea and its pebble beaches, the beautiful landscape of the Neretva river estuary and the main town Metković, where hardworking farmers grow juicy watermelons, fragrant strawberries and mandarins, offers a completely different picture of Croatia. The Neretva river and its magnificent delta are home to various birds and fish, one species is particularly interesting as it is a species of trout that can reach weights over thirty kilograms. Those interested in the history and culture of this area should visit the Archaeological Museum of Narona in Vid. This on-site museum was constructed in a unique and impressive way on the former forum of Narona, where the remains of Augusteum, a temple dedicated to Divine Augustus built as early as 10 BC, were enclosed within this contemporary structure.

For adventurers, we recommend a visit to the nearby cave in Predolac or a ride on the traditional Neretva boat called lađa during which you can enjoy picking mandarins right from the tree. Every year on the second Saturday in August, a unique Boat Marathon is held in Metković, a sports competition of traditional vessels of the Neretva Valley on a 22.5 km long route from Metković to Ploče. This tourist attraction is regularly attended by thousands of spectators along the entire route. Most impressively is certainly the start in Metković, when 33 identical boats with the rumble of drums impatiently head towards the finish line.
