Vid, The valley of Neretva

The small settlement Vid near Metković became famous through the remains of the ancient Roman city Narona, which was the most important center of this part of Dalmatia. The present Archaeological Museum of Narona was built on the site of the ancient temple dedicated to Augustus. The most representative exhibits, derived from years of archaeological excavations, are on display in the museum's permanent exhibition and date from the end of the 3rd century BC to the 15th century AD. The main exhibition hall, which is located on the site of the Roman temple itself, features statues of emperors and their family members. Life in Roman Narona ceased sometime in the 7th century, while the present village of Vid developed in the 18th century on the remains of Narona.
