The town of Veli Lošinj, Island Lošinj

Veli Lošinj, which is located on the southeast side of the island of Lošinj, used to be the largest settlement on the island in the past, but over the years Mali Lošinj has developed faster and is today more populated than Veli Lošinj. A great way to learn more about Lošinj’s rich history is by visiting its churches and chapels: the Church of St. Nicholas from the 14th century, the 15th-century Church of St. Anthony the Abbot in the port, the Church of Our Lady of the Angels from the 16th century, the Church of St. Peter and others, but also the circular tower from the 15th century in the centre of Veli Lošinj, which was erected against pirate attacks. Today, the tower has been restored and serves as a museum space that shows the famous maritime past of Lošinj. Veli Lošinj is a place of luxurious villas, palaces and large houses with carefully preserved and landscaped yards and flower gardens full of exotic plants that the famous sailors of Lošinj brought home from their distant journeys. Almost every garden in Lošinj represents a small botanical treasury. In front of the former residence of Archduke Charles Stephen that is today a well-known health resort, you can find over 200 different plant species in the charming Veli Lošinj Park. As early as 1892, after studying the benefits of the island’s microclimate, Mali and Veli Lošinj were declared climatic health resorts. The Lošinj Health Resort is still operating today and a popular rehabilitation centre for people with respiratory problems, who, in addition to treatment, enjoy the sea and the sun and all the benefits of the beautiful nature of Lošinj.

As many as 200 dolphins live in the waters around Lošinj. The Blue World Institute in Veli Lošinj conducts research and studies on these dolphins. In addition to volunteering in their base, you can also adopt dolphins here and thus contribute to their protection. Within organized tours you can sail to the open sea where you will surely come across the cheerful game of these beautiful Adriatic creatures. Within the hotel complex in Veli Lošinj you can enjoy relaxing at the beach Punta or find a slightly more intimate atmosphere in Rovenska Bay. Friendly hosts will accommodate you in their apartments, villas and holiday homes with sea views. Of course, the locals of Veli Lošinj are excellent fishermen, so Lošinj's restaurants and taverns are always well-stocked with fresh fish and shellfish. Homemade sheep cheese and cottage cheese, maneštra (a type of minestrone), squid or octopus prepared according to local recipes with aromatic spices and top quality olive oil, are just a part of the gastronomic offer of Veli Lošinj. With a good drop of Trojišćina wine we can only wish you a warm welcome in Veli Lošinj.
