City of Rijeka, Kvarner

The urban and cosmopolitan city of Rijeka is the largest Croatian port and the third largest city in the country. Rijeka’s rich history is inscribed in numerous sacral monuments that can be seen all over the city, such as the 16th-century Church of St. Fabian and St. Sebastian, the impressive Cathedral of St. Vitus from the 17th century, the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the Leaning Tower, the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, as well as many beautiful Venetian palaces and buildings, in which most cultural and administrative institutions are located today. Rijeka’s famous promenade and most popular street is the Korzo, which represents the centre of cultural and public life. The Korzo is the place where local’s love to drink their coffees, but also where numerous city events, including the famous Rijeka Carnival in February, are held. The central place on the promenade is the baroque City Tower with the clock, while beautiful baroque buildings and palaces line the streets in its surrounding. Not far from the famous clock are Kobler Square and the Old City Hall with the Roman Arch (Old Gate) and the remains of a late ancient castrum behind them. In addition to Rijeka’s famous buildings, such as the Palace of Justice, the Dominican monastery, the Modello Palace and the Croatian National Theater Ivan pl. Zajc, the city’s many museums are also must-see sights: the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Maritime and History Museum, the City Museum of Rijeka and the Natural History Museum. The mediaeval Trsat Castle above Rijeka has guarded the city for centuries and is certainly an attraction worth visiting, nearby is also the complex of the Franciscan monastery with a church and pastoral centre - the Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat. According to tradition, the house of the Holy Family appeared in this place in the 13th century, when angels brought it from Nazareth. It remained there for 3 years before the angels relocated it to Loreto, Italy.

Today, Rijeka is considered to be the centre of a very lively urban scene, which brings together famous Croatian musicians, actors and artists. The city is therefore the venue of many cultural and stage events, concerts, various performances and interesting plays.
