The cave Strašna peć

The cave Strašna peć is located near the village Savar. It was first mentioned in 1898 in the Zadar newspaper "Il Dalmata", and once even visited by the Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph. The entrance to the cave has an access staircase and is located at 70 meters above sea level. The descend into the cave is at first gentle, but becomes steeper towards the bottom. It is believed that the cave once served as a habitat for the first people who inhabited Dugi Otok. An interesting find is a knife from the Stone Age, which experts associate with the Neolithic era. The origin of the cave itself is connected with the legend according to which the cave was excavated by fairies wanting to divide the island into two parts at its narrowest part, but while they were digging, the sun came out and trapped them forever in the cave.
